Art Outside the western world: Haiti For this project, I chose to cover Haitian art and artists. I have a deep connection with Haiti as most of my family is from there. I think Haiti has some unique art that is worth looking at. "Cathedral" by Philomé Obin (1950) Philomé Obin was a renowned Haitian painter who often painted scenes of Haitian life, history, and folklore. "Cathedral" is one of his iconic pieces, showcasing the beautiful architecture of the Port-au-Prince Cathedral. The application of flat and bold colors within defined outlines is a concept fairly used in Haitian art. The artist's deliberate choice of vivid colors creates a lively atmosphere and shows the tropical vibes and aurora of Haiti. "La Sirene" by Edouard Duval-Carrié (1993) Edouard Duval-Carrié is a contemporary Haitian artist known for his unique fusion of traditional...

Diversity and inclusion by Xavier JL

Diversity and Inclusion in Art Diversity and inclusion have been important themes in postmodern art, as the movement constantly challenges traditional norms and brings a more inclusive approach to art. Artists often use their work to address social issues, promote diversity, and advocate for minorities or any underrepresented community.    "The Emancipation Approximation", Kara Walker,1999 The first piece I will cover is The Emancipation Approximation by Kara Walker. Kara Walker is an American artist known for her powerful and provocative works that address issues of race, gender, and identity. She mainly focuses on racial injustices and inequality. The artwork takes the form of a large-scale, black-and-white silhouette. The use of black-and-white silhouettes creates a contrast and g...

The influence of African Americans by Xavier JL

Image
The Influence of African Americans   African Americans have had a significant impact on modern art. African American artists have made important contributions to the development and evolution of modern art through unique perspectives and styles. They brought in some new concepts and ideas that contributed to the progress of modern art. Their art also included deeper messages to fight for social justice and equality such as racism, civil rights, and identity. Their work eventually impacted and influenced the history of America and led to changes. Movements such as the Harlem Renaissance or abstract expressionism are only a few examples of what African American artists brought to the table. Can Fire in the Park, Beauford Delaney, 1946 Created in 1946, this painting is issued from the Abstract Expressionism movement. This piec...

Luminism versus Impressionism- Xavier JL

Image
Luminism versus Impressionism For this week's blog post, I decided to compare two styles that had a lasting impact on the romantic period. Luminism and impressionism emerged as influential styles within the Romantic era, with Luminism capturing serene landscapes with luminous light and calm atmosphere, while Impressionism portrayed short light moments and atmospheric impressions with the use of vibrant colors and brushstrokes. Impression Sunrise (Monet, 1871) Impression Sunrise is the work that coined the word "Impressionism". Monet is seen as a pioneer in the impressionist movement. I really enjoy this piece because it is peaceful and smooth. Feels like it’s a piece that can easily fit in any household and look good.  The brushwork in this piece creates a sense of movement and captures a perfect sunrise. Monet uses contras...

Art and Scientific Discovery in the 1700’ by Xavier JL

Image
Art and Scientific Discovery in the 1700’ I chose to present the topic of “Art and Scientific Discovery in the 1700s” because it has a lot to cover and offer. It was a period that saw significant progress not only in the arts but also in the science sector. This period is referred to as the Enlightenment and influenced artists across the world which led to the emergence of new genres such as neoclassicism, rococo, and romanticism. Those three genres revived classic art principles by bringing back elegance as well as emphasizing individual emotions in the natural world. Scientific discoveries were a huge help in making those paintings realistic and relatable. They influenced art by inspiring more precise depictions of nature, advancements in perspective and lighting techniques, and a greater emphasis on anatomical precision and representing the human body. Artists also incorporated scientific instruments and explored Enlightenment ideals, using art as a medium to express ra...

Baroque blog- Xavier JL

Baroque era Supper at Emmaus - Caravaggio - 1601 National Gallery, London "Supper at Emmaus" is a famous painting created by the Italian Baroque artist Caravaggio in 1601. The painting depicts a biblical scene, where two disciples of Jesus encounter him after his resurrection. This piece is known for its dramatic lighting and intense realism. The light source falls directly on Jesus' face and hand, emphasizing his presence and drawing attention to him. The faces of the disciples display a range of emotions, including surprise and curiosity. I enjoy this piece from the Baroque era. The scene displayed is very vivid and the shades and colors add a dramatic effect to it. You can feel the emotions and the conflict going on in this discussion and I think that this piece represents the Baroque painting movement. I wouldn't personally own a copy of it but I think this piece should definitely be displayed in a museum because it has a lot to cover and it represents well its ar...

Venus and Cupid , Xavier JL

Image
Italian and Northern Renaissance Venus and Cupid Lorenzo Lotto 1520s Oil on canvas I chose to present this piece because I think it represents well the art movement we saw in Italy during the renaissance. In that era, the beauty of human and realism was put up front. In this piece, Lorenzo Lotto really showed the beauty of the human body, most specifically the woman and drew the body with realistic proportions and forms. She is seen laying on the ground in a wealthy set and background and her status of goddess is well shown. Since Venus is a goddess, this could be seen as the representation of a perfect human body according to societal norms at the time of the painting. There is a wide range of color that is used in this painting which adds detail and warmness to the piece. It is also very easy to observe the emotions of both Cupid and Venus. Venus appears serene, confident and seductive. On the other hand, Cupid has a mischievous expression, reflecting his role as a love-inducin...
