Haitian art by Xavier JL
Art Outside the western world: Haiti
For this project, I chose to cover Haitian art and artists. I have a deep connection with Haiti as most of my family is from there. I think Haiti has some unique art that is worth looking at.
"Cathedral" by Philomé Obin (1950)
Philomé Obin was a renowned Haitian painter who often painted scenes of Haitian life, history, and folklore. "Cathedral" is one of his iconic pieces, showcasing the beautiful architecture of the Port-au-Prince Cathedral. The application of flat and bold colors within defined outlines is a concept fairly used in Haitian art. The artist's deliberate choice of vivid colors creates a lively atmosphere and shows the tropical vibes and aurora of Haiti.
"La Sirene" by Edouard Duval-Carrié (1993)
Edouard Duval-Carrié is a contemporary Haitian artist known for his unique fusion of traditional Haitian art with modern techniques and themes. Duval-Carrié's piece combines traditional Caribbean folklore with a contemporary artistic sensibility, making it a standout example of Haitian art in the 21st century. The composition employs a mix of materials and textures, combining acrylic painting with elements of collage and assemblage. This layering technique adds depth and texture to the artwork, inviting us to engage with different dimensions. I personally like this piece a lot because you can really see the talent from the artist. The piece stands out by its quality and attention to detail and I would definitely own and display this in my house.
“Bay of Jacmel” by Préfète Duffaut (2009)
This piece is a little bit more recent. Préfète Duffaut was known for his vibrant depictions of Haitian landscapes. I like this piece because this is the bay where my family comes from and it’s a good way to connect with my homeland through art. The painting depicts vibrant colors, many small details, and an overall depiction of the landscape. The textured brushwork and visible brushstrokes bring texture to the painting. The mix of light and shadow, particularly on the water's surface and the buildings' facades, creates a sense of depth within the relatively flat composition. Overall, I think this is a piece that is very original and vibrant and I would definitely own a copy of it.

This is awesome! I love the differences in the artwork that you feature, although I love how all pieces have such great texture. I have never really learned about Haitian art so this was super cool to learn about.
ReplyDeleteCathedral is my favorite out of the 3. All the different colors that are used are what draw me to it. I am wondering what the folklore story is behind the La Sirene. I love the colors of Bay of Jacmel! Great pick for your Haitian artwork!
