Eugene Delacroix, Liberty Leading the People, 1830, Romantic movement

I chose to present, Liberty Leading the People. I think this is a very powerful piece with a strong message that mixes women's rights as well human rights and the french revolution. The central figure of the painting is a female figure personifying Liberty. She stands at the front and middle of the image, holding the French flag high above her head, symbolizing the idea of liberty and equality. The first thing that strikes me in this piece is the contrast of colors. Every character is darker with more shading opposed to the woman who stands out in the light with a colorful flag. The artist also uses diagonal lines to convey the feeling of action and urgency in the piece. We mainly see this effect in the flag and the woman. Finally, another point that really stands out in this painting is the use of texture. We see it mainly in the clothes and the flag where folds and creases are added to the characters' clothes. This adds realism to the piece and makes it more vivid and emotional.

Story of the piece:

The backstory to this piece is basically highlighting the french revolution as well as the emergence of the feminist movement at that time so it’s a very powerful piece. It is one of the main pieces of the Romantic movement which was an artistic movement in France and Britain in the early decades of the nineteenth century and that persisted until the mid-century. I think it’s a very beautiful piece but I personally wouldn’t have it hanging at my place. I think it has a very strong message and should be displayed in museums. It is currently being displayed at the Louvre Museum.

About the artist:

Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863) was a French Romantic artist known for his emotionally charged paintings. His works featured bold colors, dramatic compositions, and depicted historical events, mythology, and landscapes. Delacroix's influence on the Romantic movement and his impact on future artists was significant and when he passed away he left a lasting artistic legacy
